Pouringdown: Seven Maps

Explore the 5 Virtues

Page history last edited by jay dedman 3 yrs ago

We'd like propose the following structure to help condense, evaluate and combine different suggestions:

  • Who: The subject featured in the video each day -- could just be Daniel's voice over or a specific type of person
  • What: Question or topic to be addressed -- or specific task or goal
  • When: Any specific time of day, day of the week or order of tasks
  • Where: Country/State/City/Generalized location
  • How: Other methodological constraints
  • Why: The larger purpose and intention behind these constraints

So here's our suggestion

  • Who: Daniel's Voice Over + Potential interview subjects
  • What: Explore different aspects of virtue -- specifically Generosity, Morality, Courage, Patience, Contemplation and Wisdom (aka the "six perfections")
  • Why: These are pretty abstract topics that seem well-suited for the videoblogging medium -- much more so that just text or audio. These are also issues that aren't usually addressed within the media, and it seems like other people can suggest other When, Where and How constraints to make it even more interesting. -- Kent & Jen

  • I suggest you watch this film: The Mirror, by Jafar Panahi. It's Iranian. You can get it on Netflix. See how sound is used in a different way...among other constraints. I don't think you, (Daniel) should use voice over at all for this project since it's a comfort. Instead, push the idea of sound as an image. ...You'll see if you watch this film. At least this will give you a new perspective on it as it did to me.

  • I agree totally with Charlene about the voice. I've been trailing the pouringdown archives and i think we may need to think outside the box of what we're used to. Challenge method, not just location and narrative. This lead me to think about technology and your relationship with technology and whether this is something we could challenge? perhaps we should think about utilising "old technologies"? (8mm?) or perhaps "new technologies" (mobile phones?) - maybe each video could force you to work in new ways, with new tools every time? not sure this would be possible, thinking aloud...
